BREAKING: Woman With a Past Dares to Have a Future

Every woman in her twenties has a past, and somewhere along the way it became the first thing anyone mentioned about her. A man’s past is a resumé. A woman’s is a rumor with good lighting. And still, somehow, the real question was never what she’d done, but whether she was allowed to want anything after. They say women have the hardest time moving on, but is the world even letting her?

Last week, over a very overpriced cocktail, a friend admitted her boyfriend had been treating her own history like a lease she couldn’t get out of. He’d scrolled back to 2019 on her tagged photos and come to dinner with questions. He asked for details, then asked again with a different face on. When she met his friends, she watched herself hand over a trimmed version of her life, the good parts left in and the interesting parts cut to avoid any deeper questions.

Now she rehearses her stories, and she’s gotten very good at responding with “yeah, it’s no big deal” in a way that sounds dismissive, just to move on quicker.

Why is the only version of her history that’s allowed in the room the one that makes everyone else comfortable?

Somewhere between the scroll and the dinner party, her story stopped being hers to tell.

Here’s what I think. The woman with a past isn’t a cautionary tale. She’s the one with the most material. The most important person in the room is rarely a saint, and the future doesn’t check references at the door.

Let a girl alchemize her mistakes.

What happens when she walks in anyway? Sources say she orders the drink and leaves the lease at the table.
